A civil defence shelter is a reinforced part of a building, equipped with specially designed walls, doors, and ventilation systems to withstand shockwaves, fire, structural collapse, and toxic gases.
Sweden has approximately 65,000 civil defence shelters, providing space for around seven million people. These shelters are located in residential buildings, industrial facilities, and other types of properties. In peacetime, they are often used as storage rooms, bicycle rooms, or garages. They must be capable of being emptied and prepared for use as shelters within 48 hours.
You are not assigned to a specific shelter; instead, you are expected to use the one located closest to you. MSB’s website provides a map where you can locate the nearest shelter.
